Everything chessgrit does

This is the honest list of what's built and working today. What isn't there yet is at the bottom, labelled for what it is.

Database

Collections and search

Organise games the way you think about them, not the way the software insists.

A collection for every use

Reference, white and black repertoires, my games, model games, and tactics, calculation, strategy and endgame categories.

Basic and advanced search

By player, event, ECO, result, time control, minimum Elo — and even by your repertoire at a specific move.

A list that adapts

Sort by any column, and empty columns are hidden: an exercise collection shouldn't show rows of question marks.

Players

An index of every spelling that appears in your games, with FIDE data, duplicate-name detection and merging to fix them.

Split and tidy up

Split a collection by event, or separate annotations from games, in one click. Soft delete and a recycle bin.

Duplicates under control

Hash detection within a collection and across overlapping sources, where the same player is spelled two different ways.

Analysis

Board, engine and position

The viewer is where you'll spend most of your hours. It's built to stay out of the way.

Stockfish 18 in the browser

Real-time analysis with nothing to install, and the best move drawn on the board.

Remote engines

Connect your own server: Stockfish on the CPU and Leela Chess Zero on the GPU, both at once, each with its own colour.

Threat mode

Analyse the position with the turn flipped, to see what they'd do to you if you passed.

Position statistics

For any position: how many games got there, which continuations exist and how they ended.

Full annotation

Comments before and after each move with autosave, NAGs, arrows and highlighted squares.

Game editor

Headers, a visual starting-position editor, promote and delete variations, truncate the line from either end.

Training

Memorise it, and don't lose it

The heart of the product: constant practice, measured.

Spaced repetition

Every line has its own review schedule: 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30 days — and back to the start if you miss it.

Goals and consistency

Daily goal per area, training days per week, and a history of who changed what.

Activity map

A whole year of training in one grid. The streak shows, and so do the gaps.

Drills per area

Repertoire, endgames, tactics, calculation and strategy, each with the flow that suits it.

Guess the move

Study annotated model games with the answer hidden, and get the comment as the explanation.

Teach me the line

A guided mode that walks you through the line move by move, with the author's annotations in view.

Competition

Prepare, follow and play

From Saturday's tournament to the game happening right now.

Opponent preparation

A player's real opening tree, filtered by colour, time control and period.

Live games

Follow tournaments broadcast on Lichess while they're being played, on a live board.

Review against your repertoire

Import your games and see where either of you stepped out of the preparation.

Repertoire tasks

Each deviation becomes a pending task that opens the game right at the move in question.

Play Stockfish

A game with a clock and a configurable level, to test what you've studied. Save it afterwards and analyse it.

Random drill

Random positions from your repertoire, within whatever move range you pick.

Data

Getting in and getting out

Your games should be easy to bring in and even easier to take away.

PGN import

Gigabyte files or entire folders, with a live progress bar and duplicate detection.

Automatic sources

TWIC, chess-results.com, Chess.com, Lichess and Lichess broadcasts, updating themselves every day.

The .cge format

Package a collection, compressed and — if you want — encrypted for one specific person with an expiry date. Built for handing out courses.

Export

PGN for any game or collection, and a portable format to move a whole collection from one place to another.

Experience

The details you notice every day

Small things that stop being small once you spend hours in them.

Light and dark

With an automatic mode that follows the system, and no flash on load.

Boards and pieces

Six board palettes, four piece sets and SAN or figurine notation, in six typefaces.

Trilingual throughout

Catalan, Spanish and English across the whole app, not just the menus.

Keyboard shortcuts

Navigation, engine, flipping the board and much more, with a help page that lists them all.

Built to be quick

Position queries run on a columnar index: the reference answers even with millions of games in it.

What we're working on

None of this exists yet. It's here so you know where things are heading, not to count as a feature.

  • Two-way sync between the local app and the cloud.
  • Timed tactics and calculation sessions with less time each day.
  • Anki-style flashcards for specific positions.
  • Automatic suggestions to fill the gaps in your repertoire.
  • A user manual and a guided tour inside the app, in all three languages.
  • Collection statistics: opening distribution, results and progress over time.
